Under each photo I have a short description of the basic skill or concept that is covered and also any other concepts that are integrated into the activity . Gross Motor Skills
I usually include a checklist that includes skills such as balancing, climbing, locomotion, perceptual motor, and awareness of spatial terms such as under, over, behind and so on. Note skills such as the child's ability to move around the environment safely and easily. I also checklist SELF HELP skills such as dressing, toileting, handwashing. |
I include a checklist that includes social skills such as:
- cooperation - following rules and limits - conflict resolution - confidence in social contexts - turn taking and sharing - responsible use of toys and equipment - care for the learning environment - responsibility and care for personal belongings - positive expression of emotions |
I include a checklist on oral expression that includes:
- articulation skills - confidence in social situations - use of language to express needs, wants, feelings, experiences - conversational skills eg - turn taking - eye contact - active listening
We also do RECOUNT activities when we have and excursion or special event to encouraged children to recall and verbally express their experiences. |
We encourage the children to try writing and writing their name (even if it's at the scribble stage) and include these samples. We test skills such as alphabet recognition and numeral recognition, and note other pre reading skills that the children display such as:
- following text with a finger moving left to right - retelling stories in books - making predictions using text or pictorial cues - saying "The End" when finishing a book |

- pencil grip - hand preference - scissor control and manipulation - control and dexterity of fine motor tools (glue brushes etc)
